Your Baby’s Development at 22 Weeks Pregnant

Pregnancy Symptoms at 22 Weeks: Your Body

As your tummy grows, you may notice something unexpected: your belly button protruding! See what else is going on this week.

  • Back pain: Do you notice how many pregnant ladies pose for photos with their hands on their lower backs? This might be due to the fact that back discomfort is quite frequent during pregnancy. Back discomfort is caused by shifts in your center of gravity, weight growth, and an excess of the pregnancy hormone relaxin. The difficult part is remembering to exercise frequently and to sit up straight. To relieve discomfort, consider applying cold compresses for a few days, followed by a gentle heating pad.
  • Belly button nicknamed “Outtie”: As your uterus expands, it exerts pressure on your abdomen. Your belly button may protrude if you have an innie belly button. It will return to normal once you have given delivery.
  • Are your shoes too tight? Yes, pregnant women’s feet do enlarge. Our feet have 26 bones and 33 joints, and because relaxin loosens all of the joints, our feet tend to expand somewhat. Furthermore, increased weight flattens down the foot. Sturdy footwear can help prevent foot spread by providing lots of support to your arches during these difficult months when they need it the most. Also, consider going up half a size to assist your foot get comfortable.
  • Blood pressure: Up to 10% of pregnant women develop hypertensive disorders (also known as high blood pressure) throughout their pregnancies. Your healthcare practitioner will continue to check your blood pressure at each appointment in case anything changes. Why? It can induce preeclampsia, which affects 5 to 8% of pregnancies and causes pregnancy problems. Black women are more likely than white women to suffer preeclampsia. However, with proper screening and care, mom and baby can be happy and healthy.

Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

Stretch marks may occur or extend as your baby grows, and not just on your stomach. Tiger stripes can also be found on the breasts, thighs, hips, buttocks, and arms. Stretch marks often go through three stages:

  • They may begin itching and elevated. Depending on your skin tone, they can be pink, purple, red, reddish-brown, or dark brown. They may experience a small elevation.
  • They grow in size and may become more colorful.
  • They tend to fade to closer to your original skin tone after pregnancy, however, they may seem silverish, be uneven in length, and feel like slightly depressed ripples in the skin.

There are several products on the market that promise to prevent or eliminate stretch marks—but none have been proved to work as far as we know. Still, it’s worth a shot to apply a cream or oil to keep your skin hydrated and supple. Here are a handful of our favorites.

  • Managing Unknowns: Is this stomach ache normally? What about this throbbing pain? Should I pay greater attention to my baby’s movements? Throughout your pregnancy, you will have questions and concerns. Take a deep breath, phone your doctor if it’s an emergency (or wait until your next check-up if it’s not), and allow yourself space to halt and breathe.
  • R&R: The second trimester is all about more energy, but it’s also crucial to take it easy when necessary. It feels nice to go back to normal after the first trimester, but make time to unwind a few times a week, whether it’s an extra hour with your feet up, sleeping in late on the weekend, or treating yourself to a favorite pastime.

Your Pregnant Belly at 22 Weeks

At 22 weeks pregnant, you’re probably still gaining roughly a pound each week. Around 20 weeks, your doctor will most likely begin measuring your fundal height—the distance from your pubic bone to the top of the uterus—to ensure that your uterus is growing at a normal (read: healthy) rate. The fundal height should be between 20 and 24 cm this week.

Soon after, you may detect a dark, vertical line going down the middle of your belly. That is the linea nigra, and it usually appears between the ages of 18 and 24 weeks. The line, like so many other symptoms, is most likely caused by pregnant hormones. It’s a completely safe discoloration that can’t be removed, and it should disappear on its own once the baby is born—through some women take longer than others.

Baby movement is becoming more intense, and you may notice that the baby naps or remains motionless as you walk about. When you relax, your infant is more likely to want to practice their mixed martial arts movements.
